Johnny Clegg was celebrating his 30th anniversary in the music industry with a once-off concert at Emmarentia Dam – and we were there!
It was an exceptional experience. The guy is still as energetic as ever. Embarrassing – at my age he obiousely takes much more care about his fitness than I do. The concert was a retrospective onto his (more than) 30 years on stage, with all the great songs that that time were glimmers of hope by mixed race music, performance and lyrics expessing his outspoken views on apartheid.
Encountering “Scatterlings of Africa”, “Impi”, especially “Asimbonanga” and others for the first time performed live was sending shivers down my spine. The original Juluka band was reunited for this show only, performing the hit songs of Juluka, Savuka and Johnny Clegg spanning his 30-year career.
