Weekend Escape

Sunday, 28. February 2010

Monique is still (or should I say again?) struggling with a cold. So she didn’t join in to the remake “A weekend experiencing South African wildlife”. When we (Lars-Olof and myself) got up on Saturday at 5 a.m. to head towards DeWildt, she could turn over and continue to sleep, knowing she had already done this  when Etienne, her youngest, was visiting us in early January.

Arriving at 7:30 at “The Ann van Dyck Cheetah Centre” for the cheetah run at 8:00 and 4 hours of insight into cheetahs and other endangered species. It’s definitely worth the effort getting up so early and driving all the way from Johannesburg. (You find more details on our experience – in German – and some pictures on Lars-Olof’s blog.)

Then my introduction into geocaching. Lars-Olof used his cellphone to search coordinates of some chaches close to the cheetah centre. The following activity did remind me on my childhood, when paper chase was common play (of course without the help of satellite navigation). But walking thru the bush rousing Impalas and Zebras was a new experience.

Since we couldn’t get accommodation in the Pilanesberg National Park, we stayed an hour from there at the Hodge Podge Lodge (a backpackers place) in the Magalies Mountain Range. Leaving Rustenburg at 6:00 a.m. (second day rising with the sun) we passed the Bafokeng 2010 World Cup stadium reaching Pilanesberg National Park at 7:00 for a full day of self-guided game drive.

Pilanesberg is home of the Big Five and the very are African Wild Dogs, and lot’s of different antilopes, hippos, etc. It’s definitely worth a travel, even for a day trip from JHB (if you get up very early).

Oh Happy (and insightful) Day

Sunday, 21. February 2010

Although Sunday we had to get up rather early, since over night Lars-Olof, my son was on his way to visit us. Getting up, taking a shower, grabbing a cup of coffee, and we are on our way to Oliver Tambo International.

On the ramp to arrivals parking a new lesson in South African English.

Now I know what sports fine means.
